  354. Another alternative hierarchy is the "inet/ddn" distribution.  This
  355. consists of many newsgroups bearing names similar to traditional Usenet
  356. groups and corresponding to Internet discussion lists.    These groups are
  357. circulated using the NNTP transport mechanism amongst sites on the
  358. Internet in an attempt to reduce the number of copies of these groups
  359. flowing through the mail (some sites get these groups via UUCP and
  360. other transport mechanisms, but the volume can be substantial and load
  361. may be significant without a high-speed link).    Further details may be

  492. K12Net is a loosely-organized, totally decentralized network of school
  493. based/oriented "electronic bulletin board systems" (BBS's) throughout
  494. North America, Australia, and Europe that share curriculum-related
  495. message bases or "echo forums," classroom-to-classroom projects, and
  496. educational files -- making them available to students and educators
  497. at no cost and usually on a local phone call.

  499. K12Net was born in the summer of 1990 as a collection of FidoNet
  500. echomail conferences.  It was created by teachers so that they and
  501. their students can use networking technology to advance education in
  502. the 'K12' arena.  On FidoNet, it spans North America, goes through
  503. Europe to the Soviet Union, wanders around Australia, etc.

  505. As an experiment, m2xenix.psg.com is gating the echos (from
  506. puddle.fidonet.org aka 1:105/42) into Usenet newsgroups and feeding
  507. them to uunet.uu.net where they are available to all and sundry.  The

  541. mostly on the territory of the former Soviet Union (non-CIS countries
  542. included).  These groups are available in Europe and Northern America;
  543. due to the 8-bit encoding (KOI-8) of Cyrillic letters, minor software
  544. modifications may be required.

  547. advertisements and are relatively high-volume; the nature of the

  645. necessarily VMS-specific). These groups are a project of the VMSnet working
  646. group of the VAX SIG of the US Chapter of DECUS (the Digital Equipment
  647. Computer User's Society). They are carried by most major usenet news sites,
  648. and almost half of all netnews sites. To find a feed, contact the system
  649. managers of news sites near you, and/or post to a local or regional
  650. newsgroup and ask if anyone in the area is carrying the VMSnet newsgroups.
